Paint Pro Estimating provides digital painting, wallcovering, and special finishes take-off services for new and existing commercial construction projects. We use On Screen Takeoff and can deliver the OST file, along with a color coded take-off pdf and an Excel file of quantities. We also can provide pricing, branded proposals, shop drawings, field set ups, and more.

Do you provide an estimate for each take-off?Yes and no. Initially, we can give you an estimate or two (for free) to get the relationship started. However, giving estimates takes time/costs money and does not fit into my philosophy of a long term relationship. My business model is based upon trust. I will provide the fastest, most accurate work I can while I trust you will pay me said work. If, for any reason, you feel the invoice is unfair, then I will request you tell me the fair payment and that will be that. To date, this has never happened.

Bid documents are often contradicting. How do you handle those situations?Don't we know it! Anything that is not clearly defined is taken-off and placed in the "Fuzzy" category. You can make the decision to include, not include or ask your customer for clarification. We recently had a 10 story apartment building which had a balcony railing detail that said "painted railing". The general contractor had it included on their scope sheet for field painting. However, the specifications clearly scheduled it as factory finished aluminum. So, in this case, we excluded as "Balcony railings factory finished (per specs)"

What is a typical deliverable?It varies from customer to customer but typically, we provide An Excel workbook with take-off items, quantities and unit of measure A color coded drawing of the takeoff in pdf format The original download of folders and files The native On Screen Take-off file so you can import and review/use as needed

TIPS OF THE TRADE
If a crew is spraying at night, and you have a spare pump, send it in case one of the pumps in use goes down. Many foremen will say "don't send it, it might get stolen". This is good to hear because it shows they are concerned about your equipment. But the logic is not sound. If the other pumps they are using are not at risk of being stolen, the spare won't be either. Also, you have insurance for a reason.

I learned when I asked my superintendent "how did the spraying go last night", and the answer was "We did not get a far as we hoped". I knew a pump had gone down.

Once I started sending the spare, the response would be "The spare saved our butts and we got it all done".
